Samantha Newport FCMA
Managing Director
A CIMA-qualified professional with over 20 years of experience in finance and accountancy, I began my career as a commercial accountant before co-founding Modus Accountants in early 2018.
Since then, Modus has grown to a team of nine, supporting hundreds of clients across a wide range of industries. It’s been incredibly rewarding to build a business from the ground up and I’m proud of the business and team we’ve created.
Being part of Modus from its inception has given me the opportunity to work closely with early-stage and SME business owners, supporting them through the challenges of growth and development.
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my two young children, and recently started learning how to play golf.

Nick Wilson FCA
Associate Director
I am a Chartered Accountant with extensive experience supporting small and medium-sized businesses, having qualified in 2008. I joined Modus in 2023 and became an Associate Director in 2025, taking on a key role in supporting the team, particularly new team members and recent graduates.
I take pride in guiding both our team and clients through increasingly complex compliance demands, while also helping clients optimise their profit extraction strategies.
Outside of my professional life, I enjoy playing in a brass band, as well as running and cycling. A proud moment was completing an Ironman competition.
Layla Starsmore
Practice Manager
I began my career in finance straight out of school, starting as a cashier at a High Street bank and progressing to the role of local business manager, where I managed a portfolio of clients. After stepping away from the corporate world to start a family, I chose to retrain as a bookkeeper and accountant, completing my Level 4 AAT qualification in 2019.
I joined Modus in June 2024 as Practice Manager, ensuring the smooth day-to-day running of the firm while supporting our clients and the wider team. I’m passionate about creating a positive environment where both clients and colleagues feel looked after.
Outside of work, my weekends are typically spent at motocross tracks with my children, enjoying live music at concerts and festivals, or making full use of our National Trust membership.
Mark Spolander
Director
Over the last 20+ years, I’ve gained experience setting up and running businesses across a wide range of industries.
With a background in business coaching, I enjoy working with our clients to help them achieve their business and personal goals. My focus at Modus is helping the team with business development and marketing.
In my spare time, I enjoy spending time with my family and playing Dad’s taxi to my 3 very busy children.
Maddy Debenham
Payroll Manager
I began my career in finance eight years ago, following my graduation with a degree in Fine Art, Critical and Curatorial Practices. Since then, I’ve completed the IAB Level 2 Bookkeeping qualification and gained valuable experience working in both large corporations and smaller accountancy practices.
I joined Modus in April 2024 and was promoted to Payroll Manager in September 2025. Alongside managing payroll services for our clients, I support the team with company secretarial work, credit control, and bookkeeping.
Outside of work, I enjoy family days out, getting lost in a good book, and exploring my fascination with true crime stories.
Lauren Fisher
Accountant
Following a career change after the COVID-19 pandemic, I transitioned into accountancy having originally graduated with a degree in Sport Science. I’m now just one exam away from becoming both a Chartered Accountant (ACA) and Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA).
I joined Modus in February 2024 and have quickly embraced the responsibility of managing a growing portfolio of clients. My role primarily involves preparing year-end accounts, supporting team members, and assisting clients with a wide range of queries.
Outside of work, I’m a dedicated runner, training four days a week and competing in many events. I also enjoy spending time with my family and working on home projects as we settle into our recently purchased house.

Brooke Rusher
Accounts Assistant
After completing my A-Levels in 2021, I began my accountancy journey with Modus, where I’ve now been part of the team for nearly four years. During this time, I’ve completed my Level 2 AAT qualification and recently started studying towards my ACCA qualification at Reed Business School.
At Modus, I support the senior team with the preparation of Year-End Accounts and Self-Assessment Tax Returns, as well as assisting with bookkeeping and VAT returns. I’ve developed a real passion for the client-facing side of my role and take pride in making clients feel at ease.
Outside of work, I enjoy running, going to the gym, and discovering new places to eat.
Laura Readshaw
PA and Admin Support
I am a highly experienced administrator with a strong background in customer-facing roles and executive support, having worked with directors across small to medium-sized businesses throughout my career.
I was part of the original Modus team when we launched in 2018, and I’m delighted to have rejoined in 2023. I manage new client onboarding and provide dedicated PA support to the directors, ensuring the smooth running of day-to-day operations.
Outside of work, I’m a passionate silversmith and enjoy spending my free time gardening and cross-stitching.

Jessica Bunce
Admin Assistant
I joined Modus in January 2025, bringing nearly five years of experience at a global logistics company where I progressed from operations through to office administration and team leadership.
With a strong focus on organisation and problem-solving, I enjoy supporting the team and helping clients. I’m known for my attention to detail and ability to work well under pressure.
Outside of work, I enjoy running, photography, and drawing.
